The NC State team worked with charter boat captains and mates who were experienced with use of circle hooks to look at the efficacy of circle hooks versus J hooks when trolling offshore with rod and reel. The findings are relevant for similar fishing efforts in other waters where these same species occur.
A "circle hook" is defined as a circular hook in which the point of the hook is perpendicular to ? and aligned with ? the shank of the hook. This differs from a J hook, which is shaped like the letter J.
Studies have found that circle hooks are less likely to mortally wound billfish during recreational or charter fishing. "Circle hooks were roughly 60 to 70 percent as effective at catching these three species as J hooks," Rudershausen says.
The researchers found that the fish would still strike at the bait, but that the hook was significantly less likely to set in the mouth of the fish. However, when the hook did set, anglers were just as likely to be able to get the fish to the boat.
"The charter ocean fishing industry is economically significant in North Carolina," Rudershausen says, "receiving approximately $65 million in for-hire fees in 2009. The concern is that circle hooks would drive down catch rates ? which could result in fewer clientele for North Carolina's offshore charter fishing industry."
The researchers hope to work with economists to better capture the potential economic impact of any expansion of circle hook regulations.

Robert: What's your purpose in life?
Shai: To end oil!
Robert: Did an event or person in your childhood change the way you think? For instance, in my life, my grandfather always said, "Don't be a follower."
Shai: I had lots of different events in my life. I went to college at a very early age and towards the end of my bachelor's degree, a car hit me and I ended up in the hospital for almost a year and a half. It took four painful surgeries to recoup my ability to walk. This accident taught me how fragile we are. While you've got to be focused on what you are doing, you still need to remember that everything can change at any moment in time.
Robert: Was there one failure that gave you your greatest lesson?
Shai: Just like most start-ups and entrepreneurs, at one stage of my life, I had a company that was writing software for other people and we had five contracts that we were working on at the same time. Then all five contracts, independently of one another, got cancelled within forty-eight hours. We suddenly had only two weeks of cash flow left.
Robert: What happened?
Shai: It was the best thing that ever happened. It focused me and I basically decided to stop building stuff for other people and decided to build my own product. That turned us from a service company to a product company and as a result, eighteen months later, we sold the company for $110 million. So we went from bankruptcy to success within a short time.
Robert: I had a similar experience with my company in 1998. We were building websites and I lost my largest customer, was running out of cash and then decided to build a product. We went Public on NASDAQ 18 months later after that incident with LivePerson. I often think there is some strange way in which the world works, that when you are faced with a serious crossroad, if you cross it, great things can happen.
Robert: So if you wrote your obituary, what would you hope it said?
Shai: He dared to dream.
Robert: Is there a person in your life who you really admire, who is a hero to you?
Shai: My girlfriend.
Robert: Why?
Shai: There are too many things to describe. She's just got the ability to make everybody around her better, aspire to be better, and she's always got my back.
Robert: What are your core values?
Shai: Wow. Let me describe a Better Place's values as I think it's better than describing my core values. Our values are dream big, run responsibly, invite everyone, value our people, execute with excellence.
Robert: If you could go back and change one day, which day would you change?
Shai: I know what day it is, but I cannot tell you. It is proprietary!
Robert: What would have to happen in the world to make the world a perfect place for you?
Shai: I think we need more people who are able to take big problems like oil, the environment, healthcare, education, and dedicate themselves to solving them. Not just from a passion side, but also from an engineering side of creating new systems. If we found twenty more big thinkers, who were willing to execute and dedicate their lives, I think the world would become truly a better place.
Robert: If you could get one question answered that I haven't asked you, what would that question be?
Shai: When do you think no one will buy a gasoline car in Israel? The answer is before the end of the decade!
Robert: Ok. Last but not least, is there some story that you would like to tell that tells your story?
Shai: It's been told many times. I presented the whole idea of a Better Place as a white paper back at the end of 2006 during a conference and Shimon Peres, who is the President of Israel. He took my white paper and then three days later he called me into his office. What I didn't know is he showed the white paper to many experts and everyone said I was crazy. He said, "If everybody thinks you are crazy, you must be leading the market and the world." Within two weeks, we had an agreement with the government of Israel to turn my white paper into a reality. A month later, we had an agreement with Renault to make the cars and a year later we launched the company. Those kinds of moments are truly rare. It's so much easier for political leaders in the world to basically look at big ideas and not want to put their name on it. It's very rare to find a political leader that's willing to step up and say -- We've got to make something happen and we're going to take a risk on a big new idea. World stocks mixed ahead of US housing data
BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian markets fell Friday amid mounting jitters over China's manufacturing slowdown. European stocks advanced and Wall Street futures rose as traders awaited the release of U.S. housing data.
Benchmark oil hovered above $105 per barrel after a big fall the day before. The dollar weakened against the euro but rose against the yen.
Britain's FTSE 100 rose 0.5 percent to 5,873.87. Germany's DAX gained 0.6 percent to 7,022.42 and France's CAC-40 added 0.4 percent to 3,486.70.
In Asia, stocks were jolted for a second day in a row by an index, released Thursday, that showed renewed weakness in China's manufacturing. The gauge compiled by HSBC fell to 48.1 in March from 49.6 in February. Figures below 50 indicate that manufacturing is shrinking.
That data comes on top of trade figures showing both Chinese and global demand falling. Weak European economic indicators added to worries about a slowdown.
"The market is disappointed that China's manufacturing sector is shrinking, so we are seeing the start of a major correction," said Francis Lun, managing director of Lyncean Holdings in Hong Kong.
The lack of bold reaction from China's government is causing investor unease, analysts said. The government has indicated it favors a pro-growth policy but so far has not aggressively reduced reserve requirements for banks on a national scale or lowered interest rates.
"China hasn't done anything to inject confidence in the market," said Jackson Wong, vice president at Tanrich Securities in Hong Kong. "That is dragging down the whole market in Hong Kong and other areas. So now we wait to see if China will roll out some bold moves."
Japan's Nikkei 225 index dropped 1.1 percent to close at 10,011.47 as the country's formidable export sector faded amid fears of slowing overseas demand. Yamaha Motor Co. shed 3.1 percent and Sharp Corp. slid 3.3 percent.
A rare gainer was Japanese food processor Yukiguni Maitake Co., which rose 0.3 percent a day after announcing a study showed that maitake mushrooms might help fight obesity, Kyodo News reported.
Elsewhere, Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 1.1 percent to 20,668.80 while South Korea's Kospi edged up marginally to 2,026.83.
Australia's S&P/ASX 200 fell nearly 0.1 percent to 4,270.40 as the country's mining and resource shares took a pounding over worries of reduced demand from China, the world's biggest consumer of raw materials. BHP Billiton, the world's largest mining company, lost 1.2 percent in Sydney.
Wall Street appeared headed for a higher opening, with Dow Jones industrial futures up 0.2 percent to 13,029 and S&P 500 futures adding 0.4 percent to 1,393.90.
Later Friday, the U.S. government will release a report on the number of people who bought new homes in February. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke will also be delivering brief opening remarks at a Fed conference on central banking in Washington.
The National Association of Realtors on Wednesday released a mixed report about the state of the U.S. housing market. Sales of previously occupied homes dipped last month, but the sales pace for the winter was the best in five years.
Housing has been dragging on the economic recovery. An oversupply of homes has weakened construction and other trades in many parts of the country.
Benchmark oil for May delivery was up 56 cents to $105.91 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.92 to finish at $105.35 per barrel on the Nymex on Thursday.
In currencies, the euro jumped to $1.3270 from $1.3181 late Thursday in New York. The dollar rose to 82.70 yen from 82.59 yen.

Fatty Meals Could Trigger Inflammation for Diabetics - Health News ...
WEDNESDAY, March 21 (HealthDay News) ? High-fat meals might boost inflammation in people with type 2 diabetes, a new study says.
Inflammation is associated with many diabetes-related complications, such as heart disease.
The study included 54 people ? 15 obese, 12 with impaired glucose tolerance (pre-diabetes), 18 with type 2 diabetes, and 9 healthy and not obese ? who ate a high-fat meal after an overnight fast.
The researchers compared levels of endotoxins in the participants? blood before and after they ate the meal. Endotoxins are bacterial fragments that enter the bloodstream from the gut and are associated with inflammation and heart disease.
All the participants had elevated endotoxin levels after eating the fatty meal, but levels in those with type 2 diabetes were significantly higher than in the healthy, non-obese people, according to the study, which was scheduled for presentation Tuesday at the Society for Endocrinology?s annual meeting in England.
Although the research doesn?t show cause and effect, the findings could explain one way that obesity and type 2 diabetes can lead to inflammatory damage in blood vessels and other tissues, and help scientists develop new ways to prevent this damage.
?High-fat, low-carbohydrate diets are often promoted to patients with type 2 diabetes as they have been suggested to aid weight loss and control blood sugar, but if confirmed in larger studies, our data show that being healthy is not just about losing weight, as these particular diets could increase inflammation in some patients and with it the risk of heart disease,? lead investigator Alison Harte, a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Warwick in England, said in a Society for Endocrinology news release.
?The next phase of our research is to understand the effects of small, frequent meals versus large, infrequent meals on endotoxin levels in type 2 diabetics. We?d also be interested to find out the effects of meals of different fat and carbohydrate contents,? Harte added.
Data and conclusions presented at medical meetings should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

Bank of Greece sees deep recession in 2012
ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? The Bank of Greece is predicting that the Greek economy will contract by 4.5 percent in 2012 and remain in mild recession next year.
In its annual report issued Monday, the central bank also predicted that unemployment would remain above 19 percent this year.
The gloomy predictions were made despite the coalition government successfully negotiating financial rescue deals with both its private creditors and emergency lenders from the eurozone and International Monetary Fund.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos will submit his official resignation on Monday after being elected to head the majority Socialist party as Greece heads into early general elections.
Venizelos was the only candidate for the leadership of the PASOK party in Sunday's elections, and is to formally take over from his predecessor, former Prime Minister George Papandreou, later in the day.
Venizelos has been at the heart of months-long negotiations that resulted in a massive second bailout for Greece and a debt writedown deal with private creditors.
"We have the elections ahead of us and I had the opportunity this morning at a farewell meeting at the finance ministry ... to give my final instructions," Venizelos said after meeting with the country's president, Karolos Papoulias, to inform him of the party election results.
The coalition government has not indicated who will be appointed in Venizelos' place. Early general elections are expected in late April or early May, though no firm date has been set.
PASOK won a landslide victory in 2009 general elections, but party defections and public anger over austerity measures prompted it to form an interim coalition government with the rival conservatives last November.
Recent opinion polls have seen its support sink to as low as 11 percent, taking a hit from widespread public anger over repeated austerity measures which have included salary and pension cuts as well as several rounds of tax hikes.
Unions have held frequent strikes and often violent demonstrations in response. In the latest labor action, dock workers walked off the job Monday at the start of what they have vowed will be rolling 48-hour strikes. Farmers on islands have argued the strike will leave them facing huge losses as they will be unable to transport their produce to the main urban markets on the mainland.
Sporadic instances of violence have also occurred. Police arrested a man armed who had stormed into a tax office in the Greek capital with a shotgun and fired a shot Monday morning. Police said nobody was injured in the shooting. The man's motives were not immediately clear.
Meanwhile, holders of insurance on Greek bonds are to learn how much they will earn from the country's bond swap deal, agreed this month with private creditors to lower the nation's debt load.
So-called credit default swaps, or CDS, act as insurance for holders of bonds in case of default. An international finance body has ruled that Greece's bond swap will trigger these CDS payouts and has estimated their total value at around $3.2 billion.
The actual amount paid out to CDS holders, however, will be somewhat less ? analysts estimate around $2.5 billion ? since the country is not defaulting on the full value of its bonds. Investors are taking real losses of about 75 percent of their bondholdings.
The size of the CDS payout will be determined Monday in an auction in which a panel of financial firms estimates the size of the losses on the Greek bonds.

The U.S. airline industry gradually moving away from all the bloodshed that caused the bankruptcy of four major companies in recent years, while at the same time, marked the emergence of many discount carriers at the forefront of the company. In fact, the face of commercial aviation has changed dramatically over the last decade and now it seems that the worst is behind us. This does not mean that layoffs and more layoffs are possible, but for the person seeking a career in customer service in the aviation industry, the future has improved considerably.
Customer service opportunities with the airlines includes the following positions: booking agents, ramp agents, online service technicians, customer service agents, baggage handlers, and various management positions, including manager of the station manager customer service, and airport operations manager. Titles like working there, but for the sake of brevity the term ?airline customer service?, I mean the ground staff responsible for assisting customers as they get to and from their destinations.
So exactly who is hiring? Well, on any given day most people could be. The turn over rate for customer service staff can be high, depending on the airline and working conditions. To make it easier for you, the following is a breakdown of the various airlines that hire customer service agents. In most cases you will be working directly for the airline, but in some cases a situation may be with a provider or the airport authority itself.
The legacy airlines ? American, Continental, Delta, Northwest, United and U.S. Air all qualify as legacy carriers. They simply define the carriers who helped the airline industry get its start in the U.S. six on the list, only American and Continental have avoided bankruptcy. Therefore, a race car with a legacy can be a risky proposition.
Foreign carriers, many foreign carriers flying in and outside the U.S. and worth a look. Depending on the selected company, you may be asked to speak the language of the country of the airline in addition to speaking English. Chief of the airlines are Air Canada, Mexicana, Air France, British Airways, Japan Airlines, Korean Airlines, KLM, Lufthansa and flag carriers and discount carriers from dozens of countries around the world.
Discount airlines, some of the strongest companies in operation today are the discount airlines. Two of the best are Southwest and JetBlue, which are expanding and are hiring regularly. Other discount carriers are: Spirit, USA3000, and many smaller regional carriers more.
Regional Operators ? Working as a ?feeder? airlines for large companies, regional operators include Colgan, Republic, Shuttle America, American Eagle, Comair, and the Great Lakes. Some of these companies are awash in cash with very promising future.
Carriers of the Charter ? A few airlines fly mainly charter flights, although some also have regular flights. Some charter operators best-known are: Miami Air, Xtra Airways, Sun Country and
Motor carriers ? Not every company moves people. Some companies to transport goods, merchandise, and equipment. Jobs customer service and sales agents and management teams are an option for potential employees. The load majors are: DHL, FEDEX, UPS, Emery worldwide, and Amerijet.
Two companies recently launched EOS Airlines and Maxjet Airways British, passed through an increase in employment immediately before its first flight in fall 2005. As with any start-up, the chances of long-term career is a big question that most start-ups with no time.
Overall, the opportunities for you in the airline industry have improved. The Workers? Compensation per hour is generally low benefits, including flight privileges, are usually pretty good. Nevertheless, the airline industry remains a point of interest for many people and with decreasing fuel prices and strength in the economy, the labor market for customer service staff is on an upswing .

Boy says teacher told him to read poem 'blacker'

A?veteran Fairfax County high school teacher has been accused of using racially insensitive language by telling a student to read a Langston Hughes poem in a "blacker" style.
Jordan Shumate, a ninth-grader at George C. Marshall High School in Falls Church, Va., told the Washington Post that he was reading Hughes' "Ballad of the Landlord" when the English teacher interrupted him.
"She told me, 'Blacker, Jordan. C'mon, blacker. I thought you were black,'" Shumate told the Post. The 14-year-old student claimed that when he refused to continue reading the poem, the teacher read it herself, apparently to demonstrate the style of speaking she meant.

"She sounded like a maid on the 1960s," Shumate told the Post, saying he asked the teacher?if she thought all black people spoke that way. ?She read the poem like a slave, basically.?
He said he was reprimanded for talking out of turn and was told to sit down.
Shumate told his mother, Nicole Cober Page, about the?incident on Tuesday, the Post said.
According to the Post, mother and son identified the teacher as Marilyn Bart. Bart has not spoken publicly about the alleged incident, the Post reported.
Principal Jay Pearson declined to provide further details on Friday, adding, ?We take these allegations very seriously, and we?re investigating.?
