Sarah Churman was born deaf, but earlier this year, at the age of 29, she underwent a procedure that suddenly allowed her to hear. Soon after, Churman decided to celebrate the life-changing event with a new tattoo at Ami James' "NY Ink" hotspot, the Wooster St. Social Club.
See Churman share her story with tattoo artist Tim Hendricks in this sneak peek from TLC. ?
"(My husband's) mom came to us one day and she said, 'Listen, I'm going to pay for the sugery.' It absolutely broke my heart that his widowed mother was going to cash in her savings and didn't think twice," a teary-eyed Churman explained to Hendricks as he inked a pinup girl along her side. "As soon as the words were out of her mouth, I called and started setting stuff up and told them give me the soonest date they've got."
If her story sounds familiar, it should. Churman rose to viral video fame after her husband uploaded a clip to Youtube which featured her reacting to the very first sounds she'd ever heard beyond vibrations and some noises an earlier hearing aid provided.
She also visited TODAY in October and explained just how profound her experience has been.
To see more of Churman's moving story, and the completed tattoo she got to commemorate it, tune into to the season premiere of "NY Ink" Thursday night at 9 p.m. on TLC.

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) ? Virginia alcohol regulators say the Discovery Channel's "Moonshiners" television show is misleading viewers into thinking the state is tolerating illegal booze manufacturing and that it wouldn't have participated if they knew how the episodes would turn out.
The television series is about people who brew their own moonshine and local authorities' efforts to track them down. The show includes actual western Virginia residents and state agents.
Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control spokeswoman Kathleen Shaw told The Associated Press in an email Thursday that viewers have asked why the state is allowing a crime to take place. Shaw said the show is a dramatization, and no illegal liquor is actually being produced.
"If illegal activity was actually taking place, the Virginia ABC Bureau of Law Enforcement would have taken action," Shaw wrote.
Earlier Thursday, the department issued a statement saying it would not have participated in the filming had they known how the show would've turned out.
"Virginia ABC agreed to participate in an informative piece that documents the history of moonshine and moonshine investigations in Virginia. Virginia ABC did not participate nor was aware of the false depiction of moonshine manufacturing, distribution and/or transportation in the filming, and would not have participated in the 'documentary' had it known of this portrayal," the statement said.
Shaw said the Discovery Channel had been asked to add a disclaimer "but the request was overlooked."
Messages left with a show publicist Thursday were not immediately returned.
Among other things, a Nov. 30 news release announcing the show's premiere says that "Viewers will witness practices rarely, if ever, seen on television including the sacred rite of passage for a moonshiner ? firing up the still for the first time."
The release does not specify whether parts of the show are dramatized.

From a lounge in a renovated Las Vegas wedding chapel to a 19th-century-style saloon, America?s best bars celebrate the handmade, the historical and the locally sourced.
Slideshow: Take a look at the 50 best bars in America
San Francisco?s 4,000-square-foot Bar Agricole is deeply dedicated to the farm-to-shaker movement: Bitters, syrups and sodas are house-made, often with ingredients from the garden. The best drinks tweak the classics, like the rum Agricole Mule.
In Chicago,?the 16-page drinks menu at Hotel Palomar's?Sable Kitchen & Bar?quotes Jean-Jacques Rousseau, lists cocktails like the Chuck Yeager (rum with cinnamon-bark syrup) and boasts one of the city's largest amber spirits collections.
New York City bars are often fashioned after speakeasies, but Dutch Kills in Long Island City embraces the pre-Prohibition era. Modeled after an 1890s saloon, this bar serves classic cocktails made with hand-cut ice. Live jazz and ragtime bands play throughout the week.
As a fun nod to the lure of Las Vegas, the spacious and mellow Downtown Cocktail Room has opened there in a renovated wedding chapel. Inside, you can order cool drinks like the Cat?s Pajamas: gin, Campari, orange juice, Chartreuse and maple syrup.
For home bartenders taking inspiration from the country?s best mixologists for a holiday party, Food & Wine contributing editor Jim Meehan (author of the new?"PDT Cocktail Book")?has some advice: ?Cocktail party guests often bring their favorite spirits ? rum, vodka, whiskey. By stocking up on mixers like vermouths, liqueurs, bitters, natural sodas and fresh citrus juices, you?ll always be able to make drinks everyone will love.?

January's right around the corner and with the promise of a new year comes the anticipated release of CM9. So, to whet those ROM-flashing appetites, the CyanogenMod team's made an alpha of its Trebuchet launcher available as an .apk and .zip file over on XDA, bringing with it the ability to customize the number of homescreens, resize widgets and sort the app drawer, amongst other planned features. As is the nature of Android's underbelly, you'll need to have your device rooted, as well as running 4.0.3 in order to take part. And if you do decide to take the plunge, remember this is far from the final build, so things are bound to get buggy. Check out the source below to preview the ICS goods.

If you?re anything like the Heat Index, you probably caught at least one replay of ?A Christmas Story? during its continuous Christmas Day marathon broadcast.
OK, so the Heat probably wound up watching it at least five times on Sunday. What can I say? It was a lonely day at the Heat compound.
Anyway, remember when 9-year-old Ralphie Parker is all bummed out because after everybody in the family opened up their presents, he still hadn?t gotten his beloved Red Ryder BB Gun?
Then, long after all the unwrapping, his father pointed to a half-hidden present leaning up against a table. Alas, there was joy in Hohman, Indiana! Ralphie got his BB gun after all ? and then promptly nearly shot his eye out.
Well, it?s the day after Christmas and the Heat is in a giving mood. So we thought, why not spread a little holiday cheer and pass out some belated Christmas gifts to some of our favorite people in sports?
So grab some eggnog and gather ?round the tree, kiddies, and see what presents Santa Heat decided to dole out.
To Texans and former Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart: a pair of titanium collarbones. To Steelers linebacker James Harrison: a copy of ?Tackling for Dummies,? autographed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
To the Miami Heat?s LeBron James: a think-before-you-speak pill. Not one, not two, not three, not four, not five. ? ah, you get the idea. To Orlando?s Dwight Howard: the right trade. To the Lakers? Kobe Bryant: a discount from Zales the next time you?re thinking about buying an engagement ring.
To slugger Albert Pujols: good health for the next 10 years so you can live up to that ridiculous contract you signed with the Angels. To the Diamondbacks? Justin Upton: continued success with humility. To free-agent slugger Prince Fielder: a happy home, wherever it is.
To Pete Rose: reinstatement and ultimately, enshrinement into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. It?s time.
To Penguins star Sidney Crosby: a clear mind and a protective wingman like Wayne Gretzky had in Dave Semenko. To the Coyotes: a white knight to ride into town, slay the naysayers, buy the team and keep it in Glendale. To former Coyotes head coach and Jack Adams Award winner Bobby Francis: another shot behind the bench in the NHL.
To Colts quarterback Peyton Manning: a ?flash? from one of those thingamajiggers from the movie ?Men in Black? that erases your memory so you can forget about the 2011 season. To Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, the likely No. 1 pick in next year?s NFL draft: patience, especially if you land in Indianapolis.
To Southern California quarterback Matt Barkley: a healthy senior year now that you?ve decided to stay in school. To Charles Barkley: a real golf swing and the conscience to remember you still owe me a hundred bucks. To Suns guard Steve Nash: an NBA championship before you retire.
To Danica Patrick: your first NASCAR victory, and how cool would it be if it?s at the Daytona 500? To nasty NASCAR driver Kyle Busch: A Valium every time you start to lose it. Ditto to Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.
To Bill Cowher: A head coaching job in the NFL, back where you belong. To 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh: A more likable personality. To Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow: a fair shake next year in Denver, regardless of what happens the rest of this season.
To Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb: see Peyton Manning?s gift ? and use it twice, just in case. To Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt: a third game ball should you actually finish 8-8 after that horrendous 1-6 start when everyone wanted to see you fired.
To Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan: an appointment with my longtime barber, Wayne, the Chargers? fan in Avondale. To all NFL referees: the willingness to pick up a flag and wave off so many unnecessary penalties called by you and your crews.
To Jets receiver Plaxico Burress: a Nerf gun. To Diamondbacks pitcher Ian Kennedy: a trademark on that whole ?Nerf beard? thing.
And finally, to all sports fans, one and all: A safe, prosperous and happy new year!

Australia skipper Michael Clarke has reportedly asked a win against India as a Christmas gift from Santa.
In a report published in the Herald Sun, Clarke was appreciated for being 'selfless' this festive season and pray for collective glory rather than for personal ambitions. "All I want for Christmas is to beat India in this first Test match," he was overheard as jokingly telling a Santa Claus in his team hotel.
The 30-year-old batsman is believed to have sat on Santa's lap as he posed for fans in the hotel. "Yes, I've been a good boy," he said and added laughingly that he was not sure about David Warner, the other cricketer who was also present here with him.
Experts and fans may have mostly put money against his side and the year? may have passed with more lows than highs. Clarke however has managed to battle past a back ailment and his Christmas wish does not come as an entire surprise.

KANO, Nigeria (Reuters) ? Clashes between a violent Islamist sect and security forces in Nigeria's northeastern city of Damaturu have killed at least 24 people in the past day, police said on Friday.
A sustained gun battle broke out between Nigerian security forces and suspected Islamist militants in Damaturu on Thursday, and several explosions were heard.
Then on Friday suspected sect members opened fire on a group of policemen shortly after Friday prayers in the city, killing four, local police officials said.
Police commissioner Lawan Tanko of Yobe state, of which Damaturu is the capital, told Reuters a dusk to dawn curfew had been imposed on the city.
"The situation is now calm. We lost seven security men and twelve members of the Boko Haram sect were killed in the shoot out last night," he said.
"Though you cannot predict members of the sect, our men and the military are combat ready. Only one civilian was killed (in the violence on Thursday)."
Confrontations between security forces and the Boko Haram sect have become increasingly frequent in the past couple of weeks, as the north's simmering conflict escalates, though the insurgency remains low level and sporadic.
Nigerian police arrested 14 suspected members of Boko Haram and seized explosives after a gun battle left four militants and three policemen dead in the city of Kano last weekend.
Lawan said the fighting in Damaturu broke out after his men raided a suspected Boko Haram hideout.
Damaturu was the scene of the most deadly Boko Haram assault to date, when 65 people were killed in a wave of shootings and bombings on November 5 that left churches, police stations and mosques reduced to smoldering rubble.
At least 11 people were killed in a separate shootout in the northeastern city of Maiduguri, Boko Haram's heartland, on Thursday, an official at the morgue said.
Morturary attendant Bab Aminu said he had received the bodies overnight.
Boko Haram, whose name roughly translates as "Western learning is forbidden" has been blamed for scores of shootings and bombings in the north, including a spate of attacks in the past few weeks across the region.
Despite many crackdowns, Nigerian security forces have so far been unable to contain Boko Haram violence. This year the group struck in the capital Abuja twice, including a suicide car bomb attack against the U.N. headquarters that killed 26 people.

Scholarship Fund Benefits Chinese-American Students
The newly established Society of Chinese American Professors and Scientists (SoCAPS) scholarship fund recognizes and rewards UC students for their contributions to the community.
"We want the younger generation to love this country and value it as much as we do,? says Jeff Guo, PhD, a professor in the James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy who helped establish the scholarship fund, which provides financial assistance to Chinese-American students active in community service.
"The service can be anything from volunteering in a nursing home or at an election,? Guo says, pointing to the purpose of recognizing the volunteer efforts students make toward the greater good.
According to Guo, there are more than 100 Chinese-American faculty members at UC and more than 200 additional Chinese-American research associates, lab assistants, postdocs and administrative staff.
The national Society of Chinese American Professors and Scientists (SoCAPS) was established in 2003 by professors and scientists in the Midwest. The SoCAPS Cincinnati chapter was established in 2005.
Guo has served as president of the Cincinnati chapter since 2010. Past presidents include Xinhao Wang, PhD, interim director and professor, School of Planning, College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning; and Lin Liu, PhD, vice dean for international affairs, McMicken College of Arts and Sciences.
Guo says the first scholarship of $1,000 is expected to be awarded in March 2012, with more awards as the fund grows. Once the fund reaches $30,000, the scholarship preference will extend to Asian-American students.
"We have no clear timeline, but we certainly want it to grow bigger and need the support of business and personal contributions,? he says.
Wang is one of two co-chairs for the UC SoCAPS scholarship program; the other is Mei Tang, PhD, director of the psychology graduate program in the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services.

Children who are breastfed through age 18 months have healthier growth patterns and reduced incidence of diabetes and obesity, says a new study from Denmark. Here are findings from this study about breastfeeding child health benefits and implications for parenting.
Current maternal breastfeeding habits
The Center for Disease Control recommends that mothers breastfeed babies exclusively for at least the first six months of life. After that age, parents usually begin to supplement breast milk with solid foods or other milk. Only about 25 percent of mothers are breastfeeding exclusively after six months.
Breastfeeding and infant growth
The Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Copenhagen Professor study set out to determine if mothers who breastfed longer had babies with healthier weight gain patterns. Study author Dr. Kim Fleischer Michaelsen, explains, "It is well-known that children who are breastfed grow slightly more slowly than children who are given formula, and it looks as if this growth pattern is optimal because it reduces the risk of developing lifestyle diseases later in life."
Breastfeeding beyond six months
The study demonstrated that mothers who breastfed beyond age six months and up to 18 months were able to keep their children's' IGF-I growth hormone and insulin levels down. They found that the longer a mother breastfed her child, the lower the child's weight. Breastfed children had a lower risk of becoming obese as they grew older. Lower insulin levels in breastfed babies mean lower risk for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, too. Study authors concluded that mothers should consider breastfeeding children exclusively rather than supplementing with formula or other milk. They recommend that mothers breastfeed children beyond age six months and up to age 18 months healthy growth patterns.
Child sleep patterns affect weight gain
The study revealed that other parent habits affect weight gain in toddlers, too. Children who slept more had smaller waist sizes and less belly fat. Study authors suggested that parents should set healthy sleep schedules for children and encourage napping.
Maternal weight gain affects child weight gain
Mothers who gained a great deal of weight during pregnancy gave birth to children with thicker layers of fat than the children of mothers with normal weight gain, the study found. Mayo Clinic sets recommended weight gain for expectant women based on BMI (body mass index). Underweight women (BMI below 18.5) should gain 25-40 pounds. Women of normal weight (18.5-24.9 BMI) should gain 25-35 pounds. Overweight women (BMI 25-29.9) should gain 15-25 pounds and obese women with BMIs over 30 should only gain 11-20 pounds.

OAKLAND, Calif. ? A former Golden State Warriors employee filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against star guard Monta Ellis on Wednesday, alleging Ellis sent her unwanted texts that included a photo of his genitals.
In her lawsuit, which also names the team, Erika Ross Smith alleges Ellis began sending her several dozen explicit messages, sometimes several times a day, starting in November 2010 while she worked for the team's community relations department.
The messages included lines such as, "I want to be with you," and "Hey Sexy," and periodically asked her what she was wearing or doing, according to the lawsuit.
Smith would often reply with "What do you want?" or "I am sleeping," the lawsuit claims.
"On a micro level, my client has endured unwanted harassment, has suffered and continues to suffer emotional distress and trauma," her attorney, Burt Boltuch, said at a news conference in his Oakland office. "On a macro level, this type of conduct, especially in the sports world, must stop.
"She was embarrassed. She was intimidated. She felt scared and helpless."
Boltuch said his client rejected Ellis' advances and feared that no one would believe her. Boltuch also showed a photo of what he said was Ellis' genitalia that the guard allegedly sent to Smith's work-issued cellphone on Dec. 17, 2010, a day after he complained to the team about her job performance.
When questioned if the photo came from Ellis, Boltuch responded, "We know it came from him."
A call to a spokesman for the Warriors was not returned. Ellis' agent, Jeffrey Fried, said he was en route to Oakland and didn't immediately have a comment.
According to the lawsuit, the Warriors changed Smith's job description and eventually fired her after Ellis' wife, Juanika Ellis, learned of the texts and complained to team executives in January.
Smith said she told team executives that Monta Ellis told her he was using a "secret cellular phone" that was being kept by the team's equipment manager and was in the name of a third party.
Smith, who has worked in similar jobs with the Washington Wizards and the Phoenix Suns, said Wednesday that it was tough to go public.
"It was pretty hard because I knew that essentially my career is over and it would be hard to re-establish myself after working so hard throughout the years," said Smith, who believes she may be blacklisted in NBA circles.
According to the lawsuit, Smith said she told team officials that Ellis' wife called her on Jan. 7 and said, "I know about the secret phone."
Shortly after that, Smith said Ellis told her that he met with team officials and general manager Larry Riley told him "not to worry," and that "everything would be swept under the rug."
The following month, Juanika Ellis apparently used her purse to push Smith into a wall during a Warriors home game, the lawsuit said. Smith said she believes that Ellis' wife believes Smith initiated the texts with the player.
"She was accusatory towards me," Smith said Wednesday.
Boltuch said the team in February reduced Smith's responsibilities, including interaction with Ellis and other players after she refused to resign.
Boltuch said the team eliminated Smith's position in August, more than a week after she notified the team that a reporter contacted her inquiring if Ellis was "stalking" her.
The lawsuit alleges retaliation, wrongful termination and intentional infliction of emotional distress and seeks unspecified damages.
Ellis was the Warrior's leading scorer last season, averaging 24.1 points per game. His acrobatic layups and ball handling skills have made him a fan favorite though he is known to be reticent and has few endorsement deals and less notoriety than other players of his stature.
Ellis signed a $66 million, six-year deal with the Warriors in 2008 not long after winning the NBA's Most Improved Player award.
He then sustained a serious ankle injury that summer on his motorized scooter and missed most of the season, earning a 30-game suspension without pay because he wasn't supposed to be riding such a vehicle.
Ellis was recently selected as a team captain for this season.
Access to clean water is a necessity often taken for granted. However UNICEF estimates that 900 million people across the world do not have access to safe drinking water. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Biotechnology shows that an enteric virus-binding protein (EVBP), isolated from bacteria found in activated sludge, is able to capture viruses often present in contaminated water.
One of the difficulties in measuring viral contamination in water is that viruses may be present at a very low concentration yet still make people ill. Even a single enteric virus can infect a human and cause gastroenteritis, and these viruses can survive for a long time in water.
Researchers from Tohoku University and Hokkaido University used activated sludge, produced during sewage treatment by aerating the sewage and allowing bacteria to breakdown organic material, as starting material in their search for a protein able to bind to enteric viruses. Using PCR the researchers isolated the gene coding for one of the subunits of GroEL from sludge DNA. GroEL is a 14 subunit 'chaperone' protein which ensures that proteins are folded correctly during their manufacture.
Using biochemical and enzymatic assays the subunit was found to be able to capture enteric viruses. GroEL is able to bind to hydrophobic amino acids on the surface of proteins and it is thought that the newly isolated EVBP similarly binds to hydrophobic areas on the surfaces of viruses and viral fragments.
Dr Daisuke Sano from Hokkaido University explained, "Unlike virus-specific and expensive antibodies, EVBP bound all the enteric viruses we tested (norovirus, rotavirus and poliovirus). Once developed this easy-to-use method could be used to detect low concentrations of viruses in the clinic or environment."

Florida A&M today announced the hiring of a public relations firm to manage its communications strategy following the death of Marching 100 drum major Robert Champion. FAMU officials and students embrace the potential for the firm to have a positive impact on national coverage of the story.
The PR firm that FAMU hired is Dan Klores Communications. The firm has a lengthy list of clients that include some pretty big names.
DKC is based in New York. Its website lists Delta Airlines, the TV show Glee, and Yahoo among their many clients.
FAMU student Ciera Butts says, ?I think it is a good idea. But, it?s kind of sad in a way that we couldn?t stop it without getting a P.R. firm. But, I think it?s a good idea to have more help. They can say the right things and good things as they come on and look on how we progress in the hazing situation. That?ll give us positive feedback.?

Thursday night's The X Factor elimination show was the first that relied entirely on viewer votes without taking judges' opinions into account. If you don't want to know who America chose as The X Factor's three finalists, read no further.
The X Factor fielded 30 million votes for their results show, but Marcus Canty's name wasn't on enough of the ballots as he was sent home one week before the season finale.
The soulful crooner held his head high, vowing that the decision would not hinder his career.
"This is not the last time you will see Marcus Canty!" he declared.
It had been a long road for Canty to remain on the show as long as he did. The vocalist had to sing for his survival on numerous occasions, winding up towards the bottom in audience and judges' votes.
Canty's mentor, L.A. Reid, seemed more affected by the news, saying, "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little sad, right? I'm really connected to Marcus -- he's amazing. I'm not happy to see you go. I think you're a major star ... You have my support."
As the only mentor to have coached two proteges into the semi-finals, L.A. still has a chance for one of his contestants, Chris Rene, to win The X Factor's top prize.
Tune in on to FOX on Wednesday night to see finalists Chris Rene, Melanie Amaro and Josh Krajcik duke it out on an all-new X Factor.

NEW YORK (AP) ? "The Protester" has been named Time's "Person of the Year" for 2011.
The news magazine cited dissent across the Middle East that has spread to Europe and the United States and said these protesters are reshaping global politics.
The selection was announced Wednesday on NBC's "The Today Show."
Time's "Person of the Year" is the person or thing that the magazine feels has most influenced the culture and the news during the past year, for good or for ill.
Time said it is recognizing protesters because they are "redefining people power" around the world.
Last year, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg got the honor.
U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke received the honor in 2009. The 2008 winner was then-President-elect Barack Obama. Other previous winners have included Bono, President George W. Bush and Amazon.com CEO and founder Jeff Bezos.
Reusing pacemakers from deceased patients is safe and effective, study findsPublic release date: 6-Dec-2011 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Devices donated to poor patients in India
MAYWOOD, Ill. -- Many heart patients in India are too poor to afford pacemakers. But a study has found that removing pacemakers from deceased Americans, resterilizing the devices and implanting them in Indian patients "is very safe and effective."
Dr. Gaurav Kulkarni of Loyola University Medical Center is a co-author of the study, published online ahead of print in the American Journal of Cardiology. Kulkarni helped conduct the research before coming to Loyola while he was a medical student in India.
Fifty-three poor patients in Mumbai received pacemakers that had been donated by the families of deceased Americans. Following operations to reimplant the devices, all Indian patients were alive and doing well, researchers reported.
The Indian patients had severe heart rhythm disorders called complete heart block and sick sinus syndrome. Typically, the slightest physical exertion would leave them gasping for breath and exhausted. Without pacemakers, they likely would have died within weeks or months. But in India, a pacemaker costs $2,200 to $6,600, which is well beyond the means of many patients.
The pacemaker donations began as a philanthropic project. Physicians later decided to make a formal study of the safety and effectiveness of the donated devices. At every step of the study, patients gave informed consent. After receiving the reused pacemakers, they were followed for an average of nearly two years. There were no infections or other significant complications and no device failures. All but two patients reported marked improvement in their symptoms.
Of four patients who were previously employed, all were able to return to their manual jobs. Twenty-seven women said their symptoms had improved enough so they could resume household chores.
"Implantation of donated permanent pacemakers can not only save lives, but also improve quality of life of needy poor patients," researchers wrote.
Kulkarni added: "Without pacemakers, these patients would pretty much be forced to remain on confined rest, due to cardiac fatigue."
Kulkarni was born and raised in Mumbai, and at the time of the study, was a medical student at King Edward Memorial Hospital in Mumbai. He interviewed patients before and after they received pacemakers and collected data for the study. "There was a dramatic change in patients after they received their pacemakers," he said.
The Food and Drug Administration prohibits reusing pacemakers in the United States. But there is no prohibition against donating and reusing pacemakers in other countries.
Researchers reported that between January 2004 and January 2010, 121 pacemakers were removed and donated. (The devices were made by Medtronic, St. Jude Medical and Boston Scientific.) Sixty pacemakers were selected because they had a battery life greater than three years, but seven were discarded due to further decay in battery life. The remaining 53 pacemakers were rigorously cleaned and sterilized. They were sent to Holy Family Hospital in Mumbai, which serves all patients, regardless of income.
There have been previous studies of reused pacemakers. But only one previous study involved the reuse of pacemakers donated by families in the United States. That study included 12 patients in the Philippines.
The authors conclude that reusing pacemakers could "alleviate the burden of symptomatic bradyarrhythmia (abnormally slow heart rate) in impoverished nations around the world."
