Transport Master Plan Reaches Crescendo - Aussie Blog

Light rail

It was either the US President Teddy Roosevelt in reference to the Panama Canal or Kevin Costner in the movie ?Field of Dreams? that said ?build it and they will come?.

Who actually said it is irrelevant but what was said holds a lot of meaning. If you build something that people will appreciate and use, then they will want to be near it.

Back at the turn of the millennium our Government announced a 20 year master plan which aimed to deliver rail links to the northwest and southwest of Sydney. They also announced The West Connex road project and the bridges to the bush program.

The latest and final development is the recent announcement of a 1.6 billion light rail line to be built between Circular Quay and Sydney?s eastern suburbs. New South Wales Premier Barry O?Farrell has stated the aim of these projects is to provide ?an attractive public transport option to key locations? such as Randwick and Maroubra.

Improved transport networks (particularly light rail) are seen to have a positive effect on property prices.

A few years ago The Sydney Morning Herald highlighted a study that analysed the effect bus transit ways had in Brisbane.

?Median property values for suburbs adjacent to the transit way increased by between 3.9 per cent and 20.86 per cent within a few months of opening, compared with a value change of between minus 4.35 per cent and 6.63 per cent for non-adjacent suburbs?.

Demand for property in suburbs such as Randwick and Maroubra is expected to increase as a result of the new rail network.

With long commutes a challenge and inner-city property prices out of reach for many, the new transport system will offer improved access to job opportunities and improved wealth in surrounding suburbs.

[All iPads] Do you 'manage' your iPad Apps that are open?

What I mean is, do you spend much time going in and killing apps that you've recently used? I was with iPhone from the very start but in the last year or so I've been pretty fully dedicated with Android. I always made it a point to back out of apps so they'd close down when I was done using them.

I know that both iOS and Android do a pretty good job about killing processes as needed but I tried to manage it myself if I can. I never used things like Task Killers but I'd do what I could on my end.

But as it stands, I'm getting tired of worrying about that crap, lol. I just got my iPad 4th Gen and wondered if I should be perfectly fine with ZERO concern about all the apps running in the multitasking bar.

'Leaked' BlackBerry 10 info shows video chat and screen sharing in BBM, new task manager

'Leaked' BlackBerry 10 info shows video chat and screen sharing in BBM, new task manager

Top dog at RIM Thorsten Heins heavily implied that video chat would be added to BBM when BlackBerry 10 showed up, and now possible confirmation of the feature has come from what are thought to be leaked presentation slides. Originating on CrackBerry's forums, the images have been taken down on various sites, leading us to believe they're legit and that strongly worded requests have led to their removal. Not only do they suggest BBM video chat is coming to BB10, but also the ability to screen share during these video calls. Another slide details a new task manager for the OS called "BlackBerry Remember," which can sync with Outlook and -- based on its description and what was uncovered in the gold SDK -- may include Evernote integration. We've contacted RIM for comment and will update you with any response, but until then, take a look at the slide above and the pair hidden after the break to assess for yourself whether they're the real deal.

Update: Here's RIM's statement, which doesn't really come as much of a surprise:

"We understand that there is a lot of excitement for BlackBerry 10. We will launch the platform on January 30th and until then we won't comment on speculation."

Broader background checks and denial criteria could help prevent mass shooting catastrophes, experts say

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Garen Wintemute, a leading authority on gun violence prevention and an emergency medicine physician at UC Davis, believes broader criteria for background checks and denials on gun purchases can help prevent future firearm violence, including mass shooting catastrophes such as those that occurred at Sandy Hook, Aurora, Virginia Tech and Columbine.

"To reduce the number of deaths and injuries from firearms in the United States, we need to develop policies that require background checks for all firearm purchases, including private-party sales -- the most important source of firearms for criminal buyers and others who are prohibited from purchasing guns," said Wintemute, director of the UC Davis Violence Prevention Research Program and inaugural Susan P. Baker-Stephen P. Teret Chair in Violence Prevention at UC Davis.

"We need to prevent individuals with a previous conviction for a misdemeanor violent crime, such as assault and battery, from purchasing or possessing a firearm. We also need to develop better data and criteria that allow us to distinguish between those with a treatable mental disorder who do not have a history of violence from those with a history of violence or substance abuse," he said.

Wintemute's views posted on the Online First section of the New England Journal of Medicine website as a Perspective article, entitled "Tragedy's Legacy," on December 26, 2012. It also will appear in the journal's January 31, 2013 print edition.

According to Wintemute, the United States represents only 5 percent of the world's population, but it owns more than 40 percent of all firearms that are in civilians' hands. In addition, he believes that policies governing gun purchases and use have allowed the widest possible array of firearms to be available to the widest group of people, for use under the widest array of conditions. Wintemute specifically cites the "Stand Your Ground" laws, enacted at the state level, as dangerous experiments that have been used to legitimize shootings that once were considered to be murder.

Wintemute emphasizes taking a broad approach.

"It may be impossible to predict the next mass shooting incident, and we cannot expect interventions designed for specific circumstances to eliminate the risk of firearm violence. But we can change our firearms laws, based on existing evidence, to reduce harm and better ensure public safety," he said.

"Some 40 percent of all firearm transactions, for example, involve private-party sellers, who are not required to keep records and cannot obtain a background check," Wintemute said. "We need policies that prevent these quick, anonymous and undocumented sales. We also need policies that deny gun purchases to those who we know are at high risk for violence."

Wintemute's research has shown that among persons who purchase firearms legally, those with a previous conviction for a misdemeanor violent crime are roughly nine times as likely as those with no criminal history to be arrested for a violent crime later. For those with two or more such prior convictions, he found the risk increases by a factor of 10 to 15. In addition, studies have shown that firearm owners who abuse alcohol are more likely than other owners to engage in violence-related firearm behavior.

"We know that comprehensive background checks and expanded denial criteria are feasible and effective, because they are in place in many states and have been evaluated," Wintemute said. "In California, the denial policy reduced the risk of violence and firearm-related crime by 23 percent among those whose purchases were denied. But we need to broaden these and other effective state-level regulations to eliminate the flow of firearms from states where laws are lax to states where laws are stricter."

Wintemute also notes that proposals for comprehensive background checks and denials for misdemeanor violence and for alcohol abuse enjoy broad public support, including among firearm owners. Survey data come from Wintemute's own research as well as a series of public polls conducted for the Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

"While the individual circumstances of the mass shooting massacres in the U.S. are different, we can only change the outcome if we confront the challenge of unchecked and easy access to firearms," Wintemute said. "Strengthening our background check and denial policies for firearm purchases will not eliminate firearm violence, but they can reduce it."

Los Angeles police offer gift cards to take guns off streets

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Police traded gift cards for guns in Los Angeles on Wednesday, in a buyback program Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced as a crime-fighting response to the deadly shooting rampage in Newtown, Connecticut.

Police officers handed out $200 grocery store gift cards to people who turned in an automatic weapon, and $100 gift cards to those who provided a handgun, rifle or shotgun.

Los Angeles has held an annual gun buyback since 2009, and similar events have been organized in years past in several other cities, including Detroit and Boston. Police in San Diego had a buyback earlier this month.

Some experts say the buybacks have little effect in reducing gun violence, but Villaraigosa touted the buyback program as one step that can be taken in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14 that claimed the lives of 20 children and six adult staff members.

The shooter, Adam Lanza, killed himself and also shot to death his mother at the home he shared with her, police said.

Los Angeles normally has its gun buyback in May, but Villaraigosa announced last week that the city would have this special buyback in response to the Newtown tragedy.

"There are a number of things we can do. This is just one of them," Villaraigosa said on CNN. "We've got to also address the culture of violence that we've got in this country."

At last count, the Los Angeles gun buyback had collected 1,366 firearms, including 477 handguns and 49 assault weapons, said Vicki Curry, a spokeswoman for the mayor.

The buyback ended at 4 p.m. local time, but a final tally of guns collected was not expected to be released before Thursday. In May, the city's annual gun buyback program collected 1,673 firearms at six locations, compared to two locations used for the program on Wednesday, Curry said.

At each of the locations where the buyback was held, a line of cars stretched around the block, Curry said. People dropping off their guns were asked to leave them in the trunks of their cars, where officers retrieved the weapons. Those surrendering their guns were allowed to remain anonymous.

While officials in Los Angeles and elsewhere have said the gun buybacks help keep streets safe, a 2004 report by the National Research Council of the National Academies questioned that conclusion.

Among the report's findings were that guns surrendered in buybacks tend to be old or inherited from previous owners, and not likely to be used in crime. Also, gun owners find it easy to replace their firearms, according to the report, which was titled "Firearms and Violence: A Critical Review."

(AP) ? Like his ancestors, Iraqi-born falcon trainer Abu Badr al-Anazi swings the carcass of a pigeon to attract a falcon released a few hundred meters (yards) away. The bird of prey arcs over the desert outskirts of Dubai before sinking its talons into the lure.

While the methods to develop top-quality hunting falcons date back to antiquity, its transition into a modern Middle Eastern passion has brought in microchip tagging and price tags that can run well over $10,000 for a prime bird.

The falconry season starts in November in the Persian Gulf states when the weather cools. In late afternoon and early mornings, the falconers ? Emiratis, Syrians, Iraqis and others ? drive into the desert outside Dubai in SUVs to train the birds for hunting and racing competitions organizing by the country's sheiks.

Each bird has a microchip inserted beneath its skin and a numbered ring fitted on its leg for identification.

Falconry has been part of the traditional life of the Arabian Peninsula for centuries. Bedouin have practiced it to hunt hare and houbara, a quail-like bird that is among the falcon's main prey in the wild. After the Gulf's oil boom, falconry turned into a more casual sport and hobby.

During the training session, one falconer removes the hood from the bird's eyes while another, in the distance, swings the lure ? a dead pigeon or some meat ? while calling the bird's name. If the bird catches the lure, it's rewarded with some meat. Later, the falconer uses a live pigeon to carry on the training.

This part is important for Islamic hunters as it teaches the falcon not to kill its prey immediately. In order for the hunters to be able to eat the prey in accordance with Muslim beliefs, it must still be alive when its throat is cut and blood is drained. Once properly trained, a falcon will hold a captured houbara without killing it.

Spotify, revenue, and the billion dollar question | PandoDaily

spotify question

Spotify has been popular among users, but the record industry is still suspicious of the service. Ever since Napster, the music business ? hopelessly tone deaf to the changes in the media landscape ? has had a hard time trusting?Internet music companies. Spotify, which Napster cofounder Sean Parker invested in, has tried to go legit with licensing music, but many record execs and artists don?t think Spotify offers a payout that is fair yet.

So how can Spotify prove it?s got a winning model? If the company began to make a larger amount of annual revenue, would it begin to convince the music industry that the model is viable?

Regardless of the good it would or wouldn?t do to win over artists, Eliot Van Buskirk at Evolver.fm wrote an interesting report earlier this month, calling it that Spotify should make $1 billion in revenue next year. The editor at that digital music blog Nate Silver?d the financial situation at Spotify, suggesting revenue could spike to as high as $1.2 billion in 2013. (Is it sad for our profession that any mathematical journalistic analysis today conjures up images of one guy?)

But just how on-point is that prediction? Using statistics that the company has released publicly ? 20 million users, 5 million of which are paid subscribers ? Van Buskirk crunches the numbers to estimate Spotify will make about $621 million in 2013 if the site stops growing completely, taking on no new users. He also factors in some reasonable assumptions about the pay model and advertising that don?t seem to raise any eyebrows.

Van Buskirk arrives at the billion-dollar conclusion because the company says it has doubled its user base in the past year. Of course, he takes into account that growth may taper off, so he predicts revenue will land right at about the billion mark, and not a few hundred million dollars above it. Still, user expansion is quite a big variable, and it?s hard to tell just how well it will hold up. It seems a big jump to arrive at a $621 million revenue estimate, then say, ?Okay. Double it.?

But Van Buskirk isn?t alone in thinking the company can hit that milestone next year. ?It seems very likely,? says Paul Resnikoff, editor of Digital Music News, a popular trade publication. ?Subscriber numbers are ramping up pretty rapidly. They definitely have some very aggressive numbers,? he says.

Other reports aren?t so bullish. The research firm PrivCo, which digs into the financials of private companies, in October called Spotify?s business model ?broken? and in need of ?drastic changes.?

?No matter how we slice the math, it is patently clear that?something?s gotta change soon on Spotify?s business model if the company is to survive,? said PrivCo CEO Sam Hamade, in the report.

Still, Spotify claims that it?s scaling quite well. And though Van Buskirk?s and PrivCo?s reports are incongruous, they can cobble up at least some type of financial picture, at least for Spotify?s current situation.

PrivCo estimated that Spotify?s 2011 revenue was $244 million. Taking into mind Van Buskirk?s report, 2012 likely brought in somewhere between that figure and $621 million. Then apparently $1 billion is next. Of course, each of those reports presumably used different methods and numbers to arrive at those estimates, and you?ve got to take into account that one source has a very negative outlook while another has a brighter one. But it?s helpful to look at those two figures as extremes for a 2012 estimate.

But the bigger question, Resnikoff says, is whether or not Spotify?s model is sustainable for a long period of time, given how expensive licensing deals are. Convincing the holdout artists to reconsider will only help the process for both parties. I suppose the way to fortify the model is a bit circular: Spotify has to make sure user numbers keep mushrooming. One way to do that is to make sure the music catalog is expansive. And that means convincing more artists to come on board.
