Diagnosing Diabetes Mellitus

Simply ejecting your rear from the couch means your hand will spend less time digging into a bag of chocolate chip cookies.

That is the simple but profound finding of a new Northwestern Medicine study, which reports simply changing one bad habit has a domino effect on others. Knock down your sedentary leisure time and you'll reduce junk food and saturated fats because you're no longer glued to the TV and noshing. It's a two-for-one benefit because the behaviors are closely related.

The study also found the most effective way to rehab a delinquent lifestyle requires two key behavior changes: cutting time spent in front of a TV or computer screen and eating more fruits and vegetables.

"Just making two lifestyle changes has a big overall effect and people don't get overwhelmed," said Bonnie Spring, a professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and lead author of the study published in Archives of Internal Medicine.

"Americans have all these unhealthy behaviors that put them at high risk for heart disease and cancer, but it is hard for them and their doctors to know where to begin to change those unhealthy habits," Spring said. "This approach simplifies it."

With this simplified strategy, people are capable of making big lifestyle changes in a short period of time and maintaining them, according to the study.

Spring wanted to figure out the most effective way to spur people to change common bad health habits: eating too much saturated fat and not enough fruits and vegetables, spending too much sedentary leisure time and not getting enough physical activity.

She and colleagues randomly assigned 204 adult patients, ages 21 to 60 years old, with all those unhealthy habits into one of four treatments. The treatments were: increase fruit/vegetable intake and physical activity, decrease fat and sedentary leisure, decrease fat and increase physical activity, and increase fruit/vegetable intake and decrease sedentary leisure.

During the three weeks of treatment, patients entered their daily data into a personal digital assistant and uploaded it to a coach who communicated as needed by telephone or email.

Participants could earn $175 for meeting goals during the three-week treatment phase. But when that phase was completed, patients no longer had to maintain the lifestyle changes in order to be paid. They were simply asked to send data three days a month for six months and received $30 to $80 per month.

"We said we hope you'll continue to keep up these healthy changes, but you no longer have to keep them up to be compensated," Spring said.

The results over the next six months amazed Spring. "We thought they'd do it while we were paying them, but the minute we stopped they'd go back to their bad habits," she said. "But they continued to maintain a large improvement in their health behaviors."

From baseline to the end of treatment to the end of the six-month follow-up, the average servings of fruit/vegetables changed from 1.2 to 5.5 to 2.9; average minutes per day of sedentary leisure went from 219.2 to 89.3 to 125.7 and daily calories from saturated fat from 12 percent to 9.4 percent to 9.9 percent.

About 86 percent of participants said once they made the change, they tried to maintain it. There was something about increasing fruits and vegetables that made them feel like they were capable of any of these changes," Spring said. "It really enhanced their confidence."

"We found people can make very large changes in a very short amount of time and maintain them pretty darn well," Spring said. "It's a lot more feasible than we thought."

IDC numbers are in, Android leads the way

According to the IDC, Android accounts for 59% of all smartphone sales worldwide. This is a healthy jump from last year when Android accounted for 36.1% of smartphone sales. iOS is second, with 23% of sales. Last year the two smartphone OS's owned 54.4% of the market combined, ?so this is impressive growth. Android showed a 145% year-over-year change, at the expense of Symbian, which went from 26% in 1Q11 to just 6.8% in 1Q12.

Samsung is the big winner here, accounting for 45.4% of all Android smartphone sales. This is due in no small part to the success of the Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note, both of which have racked up impressive sales numbers. With the looming launch of the Galaxy S III Samsung is showing no signs of slowing down, either.

FCC boss backs usage-based pricing for Internet

BOSTON -- The head of the Federal Communications Commission said he supports cable companies' charging for Internet based on how much a subscriber uses the service, and also welcomed a cable industry initiative to share Wi-Fi hotspots around the country.

Most Internet service providers charge a flat fee and price their packages based on the speed of the service. Cable providers have been considering charging based on usage, similar to the way utilities charge for electricity.

"Usage-based pricing would help drive efficiency in the networks," FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said on Tuesday, speaking at the cable industry's annual NCTA Show.

Genachowski said usage-based pricing would also be fairer to users and would encourage competition.

Cable providers have explored usage-priced pricing, but the idea has not been well received. There have been concerns that the companies were trying to raise their fees.

Comcast Corp, the No. 1 U.S. cable operator, said last week that it would conduct a trial of usage-based pricing in two markets.

Time Warner Cable, the No. 2 U.S. cable company, launched a trial of usage-based pricing in 2009 but was forced to end it after negative feedback from consumer groups. It launched a new trial in February.

Genachowski praised the cable industry for its leadership in the development of Wi-Fi services and welcomed an initiative by several cable companies to allow their customers to access each other's free Wi-Fi hotspots.

Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision Systems Corp, Cox Communications and Bright House Networks said this week that they would share access to more than 50,000 hot spots.

For example, Comcast customers visiting New York would be able to access Time Warner Cable or Cablevision Wi-Fi hotspots by logging into the generic CableWiFi hotspot with their Comcast details.

The initiative could put extra pressure on telecoms companies such as Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc, which would prefer that customers pay for 3G or 4G wireless packages for iPad tablets, laptops and other devices.

The cable companies are determined to keep pace with consumers' demands by adding more flexible and mobile features to their service plans.

Verizon purportedly giving DROID 4, RAZR and Rezound 'global' designation via software update (update: confirmed)

No word on what the precise definition of "soon" is, but we've reached out to Verizon for comment and will update this post with any relevant information provided.

Update: Verizon officials reached out to us and confirmed that the rumors are indeed true: the HTC Rezound, Motorola Droid RAZR / RAZR Maxx and Droid 4 will all be updated "this summer." The carrier told us:

Customers will see a notification on their device when the software update is available for their device. After the software update, customers will be able to take their smartphone overseas and use voice service in more than 220 countries and receive data in more than 205 countries.

Report: Thompson Out, Media Man Levinsohn In As Yahoo?s Interim CEO

We're still confirming the news with Yahoo but AllThingsD's Kara Swisher is reporting that as of tomorrow, Scott Thompson will be leaving his role as CEO of Yahoo, and getting replaced, on an interim basis, by Ross Levinsohn, currently the global media head. Thompson's position has been mired in controversy since news broke the other week that he had lied about his qualifications -- and that situation seemed to be going from bad to worse as the company failed to act on the news in any significant way -- and Thompson remained in control. Some may even find the method in which he is finally going unsatisfactory: the company will apparently cite "personal reasons" for his departure, according to AllThingsD.

ASUS Padfone video reminds us it's a phone, tablet, laptop and stylus

One of the more memorable moments of this year's Mobile World Congress involved ASUS Chairman Jonney Shih unveiling the multitude of components that make up the ASUS Padfone. The Padfone, if you'll remember, starts off as an Android 4.0 phone, which you can then plug into a tablet dock to transform into an Android tablet. Then, in typical ASUS transformer style, adding the keyboard dock gives you an Android laptop. And then there's the capacitive stylus which also doubles as as a headset. Because hey, why not?

We got to meet the Padfone a couple of months back in Barcelona (and we've got words and video to prove it), but today ASUS has published one of the promotional videos first unveiled at its MWC press conference. There's a complete rundown of all the Padfone's features, along with specs and details of exactly how much batter life the entire package delivers. Connect the phone to the tablet, then the tablet to the keyboard dock, and ASUS says you'll get up to 102 hours of use.

There's no word on any official release date just yet, but we've got the video embedded after the break to whet your appetite.

Newfound fossils belong to giant feathered dinosaurs

Fossilized dinosaur feathers recently unearthed in China reveal one of the most fearsome fluffy beasts to have ever stalked prey on this planet. The feathers were found on three skeletons that belong to a new species of dinosaur, say paleontologists studying the fossils. One of these giant, meat-eating animals probably weighed as much as a car and stretched 9 meters (nearly 30 feet) from tip to tail.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Mariano Rivera sat on a chair in the corner of the visitor's clubhouse at Kauffman Stadium, his right knee tightly wrapped Friday night and crutches resting against a nearby locker.

In one declarative statement, the Yankees' closer put to rest any notion that he'd shuffle off into retirement after a devastating injury sustained the previous night in batting practice.

"I'm coming back. Write it down in big letters. I'm not going out like this," Rivera said.

The 12-time All-Star vowed he will return to the mound by 2013, despite hinting in spring training that this season may be his last. He said he reflected on the injury at his hotel room in the wee hours of Friday morning before making his decision.

"I love to play the game. To me, I don't think going out like this is the right way," Rivera said. "I don't want to retire because I got hurt in the way that it happened. I don't think like that. With the strength of the Lord, I just have to continue."

Rivera tore his ACL and damaged his meniscus when his foot caught near the outfield wall before the series opener against Kansas City. An MRI taken during the game revealed the extent of the injury, and Rivera dabbed tears from his eyes when he spoke in the clubhouse Thursday night.

He wasn't sure at the time whether he would return.

He was certain of it less than 24 hours later.

"Miracles happen," Rivera said with a smile. "I'm a positive man. The only thing is that I feel sorry I let down my teammates. Besides that I'm OK."

Rivera's decision was merely the start of an encouraging night for New York. CC Sabathia pitched into the eighth inning and Derek Jeter belted a two-run homer in the seventh inning, helping the Yankees snap a three-game losing streak with a 6-2 win over the Royals.

"It's always tough when you lose the greatest closer in the history of baseball," Sabathia said. "That was the first time since I've been here that I didn't have him out there."

Rivera spoke with New York Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek, who performed surgery on his shoulder following the 2008 season, and was told that he should be ready to work out again in about five months. Rivera hopes that allows him to pitch by the start of spring training.

"You know, I just kind of had a feeling in talking to him last night that it wasn't the way he wants to go out," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He still has to get through this rehab and we'll see where he's at, but Mo wants to do things on his own terms, and determine when he's done, and I don't think he wanted to be done because of an injury."

Rivera remained with the team Friday night in Kansas City. He plans to return to New York this weekend before consulting with Yankees team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad.

Rivera said he was touched by the outpouring of support he received after the injury ? even Miami Heat star LeBron James mentioned the "freak accident." There was a bouquet of flowers in the empty locker that adjoined Rivera's in the clubhouse, bringing a smile to his face.

"He's special," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said Friday night in Boston. "Hopefully he'll come back, even though he's with the bad guys."

Royals manager Ned Yost called Rivera "one of a kind," while Philadelphia closer Jonathan Papelbon referred to him as the "godfather" of their role.

"It's just kind of tough to put into words," Papelbon said. "It's just tough to see your leader, your idol ? it's hard to even comprehend it or talk about it."

Longtime Yankees manager Joe Torre called the injury unfortunate.

"Even though he has a tall mountain to climb I think he still has a lot of fight left in him," said Torre, now the MLB's vice president for operations. "It's a testament to Mariano's work ethic that he was injured while preparing for a game as he has done his entire career."

Rivera had lunch with Alex Rodriguez on Friday and spoke with Derek Jeter in front of the captain's locker when they arrived at the ballpark. He planned to address the rest of the team before Friday night's game against the Royals.

"We need him around and we need his presence and his leadership," A-Rod said. "He promised me that he's going to be around as much as possible and I'm going to hold him up to that."

Jeter simply shrugged when he was asked about Rivera making a comeback, pointing out that he knew all along that his close friend of some 20 years would never be forced into retirement.

"Regardless of when he decides to retire or slow down, I think we're going to remember him for everything that he's done," Jeter said. "People aren't going to remember him for this. It's an unfortunate incident. Whenever he decides to do it, it's going to be the same story."

Girardi said that David Robertson and Rafael Soriano will close games the remainder of the season, though he seemed to indicate Robertson will get the first shot.

The 27-year-old Robertson emerged as a dependable setup man for Rivera, tossing 11 scoreless innings to start the season. He's coming off a breakout year in which he appeared in 70 games with a 1.08 ERA, earning his first All-Star selection in the process.

"Very confident in Robby," first baseman Mark Teixeira said. "He's been so good for us in the eighth-inning role. He's got great stuff. He's got confidence. He's got the support from us and we hope to hand him a lot of leads."

The Yankees officially placed Rivera on the disabled list prior to the game, giving them 10 players on the DL ? one fewer than the rival Red Sox.

In a flurry of roster moves, right-hander Michael Pineda was transferred to the 60-day DL, and outfielder Dewayne Wise and right-hander Cody Eppley were brought up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Right-handed reliever D.J. Mitchell was optioned to Triple-A.

It's the first time that Rivera has been on the disabled list since 2003, when he missed time with a groin injury. But the sting of the move was lessened by Rivera's declaration that he would resume his sterling career once his knee has been repaired.

"I thought he was going to come back anyways," Teixeira said. "I was one of those guys that didn't believe he was going to retire. He's still one of the best players in the game. It's tough to think at 42 he'd walk away."
